Why ADHD is getting increased among kids nowadays?

ADHD, one of the most prevalent disorders in mental wellbeing in U.S. children is a disease of attention loss / hyperactivity. And in the last 20 years, according to a recent report released in JAMA, the diagnosis prevalence in this brain disorder—characterized by a trouble concentrating concentration, restlessness and impulsive behaviour—seems to have risen.

The research is focused on the data obtained annually between1997 and 2016 by the National Center for Health Statistics of CDC. Researchers observed that in children and youth (age 4 to 17), the rate of ADHD diagnosis increased from 6.1% in 1997–98 to 10.2% in 2015–2016. This is an improvement of about 67 percent. An increase was recorded throughout the board, irrespective of gender, race, race, nationality, family and geographical area.

So why are so many children reportedly diagnosed with ADHD today? Increased awareness of the disorder and access to medical care could be a factor.

Experts point to a number of possible reasons for this increase, including an increase in health care access. The study authors credit the Affordable Care Act with potentially widening access to care, especially among minority and lower-income communities. “Kids who were being underserved medically before may now have access to resources they didn’t, including things like ADHD screenings and referrals for clinical evaluations.

In addition to better diagnostic tools and more treatment options, learning more about the role of environmental factors could lead to possible preventions—especially for children who may be genetically predisposed to the condition.
