What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Its Impact on Kids?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. Obsessions are recurring thoughts. Compulsions are recurring behaviors (Diseases and Conditions, 2021).

Obsessive thoughts are unwanted by a kid with OCD. They’re tied to phobias like touching filthy stuff. To cope with his or her concerns, he or she engages in compulsive routines such as excessive hand washing. Rituals and obsessive thoughts in kids usually have a purpose and focus as they get older. Meals, bathing, and bedtime are all rituals and routines for preschoolers. These aid in the stabilization of their expectations and worldview. Younger children and teenagers begin to accumulate items and develop interests. These customs assist children in socializing and learning to cope with worry. Obsessive thoughts and compulsive rituals can become quite frequent and severe in a youngster with OCD. They may cause problems in daily life and development. Kids & teens are more likely to have OCD.

Between the ages of 18 months and two to three years, children usually express a predilection for rituals. These are referred to as age-dependent behaviors, and they are perfectly normal. It is not uncommon for children to desire to consume their meal items in a specific order or line up their toys in a specific order during this period.

The ability to ignore one’s ideas and/or be flexible with one’s behavior while maintaining normal function is what distinguishes these preferences and age-dependent behaviors from OCD.

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and other psychological problems are a point of concern for parents hence need advance treatment and diagnosis.
