Children’s symptoms may be misdiagnosed at first as being caused by other conditions, causing them great emotional pain that lasts for years.

It’s not uncommon for bipolar disorder to run in families, with different family members exhibiting symptoms to varying degrees of intensity. The likelihood of a child developing the disorder increases by 10% if one or both parents suffer from it.

A teen with bipolar disorder might bear the symptoms of depression, which include:

Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood

Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

Loss of interest or pleasure in activities

Loss of interest in sexual activity

Decreased energy or fatigue

Difficulty making decisions, concentrating or focusing

Difficulty with memory

Restlessness or irritability
