Manic disorder is a mental illness characterized by extreme mood swings and other symptoms. Some aspects of the disease and how it affects women may be different from how they are affected in men.
Mania or hypomania, or being in a “high” mood, is required for a diagnosis of manic disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), this is the case.
In females, signs of manic or hypomanic symptoms include:
- having a “good time”
- having increased energy and feeling jittery or irritable
- increased self-confidence, feeling as though anything is possible, and having a decreased need for sleep and food
- being able to express oneself more quickly and clearly than usual, as if on speed dial
- taking more risks because you’re easily distracted, such as spending a lot of money or engaging in risky activities
Depression is common in people with bipolar disorder, and the episodes can be very severe. The first sign of bipolar disorder is this symptom in 75% of females with the condition.
Depression can appear as a variety of symptoms, including:
having a bad mood or being “down”
Finding it difficult to concentrate
having difficulty sleeping
thinking or speaking about death or suicide
slowing down and speaking more slowly
experiencing restlessness
eating more and putting on weight for some people
