There is an increased risk of primary conditions or chronic diseases in people with substance use disorders. A co-occurring disorder is when a mental illness and a substance use disorder coexist. This is common in people receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Substance use disorders are more common in people with mental illness. Addiction and mental illness co-occurring disorders include a variety of conditions.

In MAT, it’s not uncommon to see one or more of the following mental health issues:

Mood and anxiety disorders

Schizophrenia

Anxiety/depression/mania

depression of a severe nature

a pattern of misbehavior

The disorder that follows a traumatic experience

disorder of inattention and hyperactivity

The following types of substances are commonly abused by patients receiving treatment for mental disorders:

Alcohol

Tobacco

Opioids

Stimulants

Marijuana

Hallucinogens

Prescription drugs
