SIGNS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN THE WORKPLACE

Addiction and alcoholism are well-known problems in some workplaces. In some cases, it’s not known, but it’s possible. When a coworker’s actions violate company policy, it’s up to management to decide whether to let him or her continue or fire him. People with substance abuse issues in the workplace are going to exhibit symptoms at some point. Among the more common signs and symptoms are the following, but they are not exhaustive:

Drug or alcohol addiction can cause major personality shifts in those who are addicted, but they may not be aware of it at first. These changes may include mood swings, difficulty concentrating, a lack of motivation, and a sense of being disconnected from others.

People with substance use disorders need to keep using no matter where they are, so they need to make frequent trips to the bathroom. When a coworker uses the restroom a lot, it’s a sure sign that they have a substance use disorder. It’s not uncommon for a coworker to go to the bathroom frequently, but when this behaviour becomes habitual, it could be a sign of an addiction, such as excessive water consumption or a stomach ache.

The majority of people only take time off when they are sick or on vacation. Employees generally arrive at work on time. An addict, on the other hand, is more likely to call in sick or simply fail to show up at all. They may not have a valid excuse for not reporting to work, and they may not have fabricated a lie to hide their absence. Among substance abusers, absenteeism is common because they may have used too much the night before, didn’t wake up to their alarm clock because they were passed out, or are more determined to obtain drugs or alcohol that day than to go to work.

A person’s health may suffer as a result of their drug or alcohol use, as is common with anyone who is addicted to either. Because of their drug or alcohol addiction, an employee of a company may begin to lose their appearance. Dirty and/or wrinkled clothes, messy hair, greasy appearance, bad breath due to lack of brushing, and so on are all examples of this
