When there is concern, or even doubt. Seek help!
Families remember these 3-C’s. You did not Cause it, You cannot Cure it, You cannot Control it.
What is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and how is it used to treat addicts.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is talking therapies that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. Its most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.
Inpatient & Outpatient Addiction
Rehab Treatment Programs
Our inpatient treatment program duration is based on a minimum of 28 days but can be extended on a monthly basis when we determined that the patient has not attained the minimum coping skills to sustain their recovery.
Serene Retreat also loves the idea of outpatient treatment and we render 6 a month’s aftercare program, but it is especially important that the patient have a genuine idea about his or her own strength of mind on the road to sobriety. Our treatment philosophy is based on the concept “EVERYONE CAN RECOVER”. This philosophy enables and empowers the individual to foster a belief that recovery is possible through peers and positive role modeling as it is best proven that only an addict knows another addict based.
Behavior modification is used to modify the person’s behavior through applying pressure on the individual through either using peers in the treatment program that is guided by professional staff members. You can also use the concept of the reward system approach where clients are rewarded through good behavior. Most too often we see clients entering treatment and are able to fake progress by what we call flying under the radar or they display angel like behaviour while in treatment. This is part of the manipulation and too often they fool professionals in thinking that they have changed, but the minute they interact or are interact or are discharge you see them going back to old behaviors and lifestyles.6

The Structure of Our Addiction Treatment Program
Our treatment program is based on 4 structures and to support these structures we have designed 5 pillars as support in the recovery process.
Behavior Management/ Shaping
This is where the recovering person begins to recognize the behaviour traits of addiction and the destructive lifestyle he/ she led.
Certain therapies (CBT, EFT, and DBT) and techniques are used to shape and modify the client’s behaviour.
Emotional & Psychological
This is where core beliefs and feelings of guilt, shame, hurt and pain are focused on the client.
One of the ways in which we handled a situation was to use emotional logic and not rational or consequential thinking. We need to think before we act on our emotions.
Intellectual/Spiritual Awareness
This is created through Psycho education and group therapy. Also focusing on understanding the process of addiction and recovery. Spiritual recovery principles are taught. Focus is also placed on prevention education and the different stages of relapse.
Vocational/Survival Skills
Vocational training and reintroduction to complete tertiary education or university/ college as most substance abusers never complete formal education. The focus on self-improvement forms a vital part of recovery as we discovered many things/ tasks were taken on but very little/ none completed.
PILLARS OF THE PROGRAM
Family Milieu Concept
Family Milieu concept ties and relationship that suffered needs to be mended through cohesiveness. Clients are also taught to be more considerate and not to act selfish as their behaviour impacts not only them but families and others.
Peer Pressure
Peer pressure is used in a community method setting where peers living in the same community address negativity in a group format to raise the awareness of the client.
Therapeutic Sessions
This is where groups and individual counselling takes place to focus on the underlying symptoms of addiction.
Religious Sessions
Religion and religious beliefs are important many have severed ties with the religious institutions and are encouraged to start adopting healthy religious beliefs. Each person is able to practice their beliefs within their own space.
Role Modeling
Clients who have completed the 1st phase of treatment and that have undergone transformation are encouraged to act as role models to the new clients. This is quite an effective method of treatment and often peers motivate eachother due to the emotional connection and commonality they have of addiction. This is also a key part of our programme philosophy of “Everyone Can Recover”.
STAGES OF CHANGE
There are various Stages of Change a person experience when they enter treatment.

ADDICTION AFTERCARE SUPPORT
Serene Retreat Sabah promotes addiction-free lifestyles, after our clients have completed the basic primary / secondary treatment program, we at Serene Retreat Sabah provide to our client weekly aftercare sessions. We will ensure that the client will be able to continue his life comfortably with harmony and not exposed to any form of relapse.
The Exclusive Serene Retreat Sabah aftercare program is called Serene Aftercare Plan (SAP). Because it is literally an extension of your residential program. More specifically what this means is that you’re staying in the same safety net in which you were nurtured in during your treatment program.
Serene Retreat has created an 3 – 6 (T&C) months care plan to bring recoverers from the release to the first 18 months. We at Serene Retreat Sabah will make sure the client will get what it takes to proceed.
Our team of aftercare professionals is made up of the same counselors and coaches who worked with the clients during his/her treatment, and this is why we describe it as a continuity of the Serene Retreat Sabah’s program. The way we have our aftercare program arranged is one of the many unique strengths of our program which set us apart from other treatment facilities.

Referral to on-site Counselors
If therapy is needed throughout the week; Counselors service can be facilitated through Skype chat.
Assessment
The clinical team will do an assessment on the client based on the families’ feedback every 3 months. This is to ensure that the former client is on the right track.
Serene Referral Clinics
At Serene Retreat, your personal care will not be limited to assistance or online reference only. In your recovery process, we care very much and will do our best to keep you occupied outside the boundary of our treatment centre. Therefore we can refer to other clinics for a lifetime healing. Long after the initial treatment, problems surrounding trauma, fitness and comorbidities require continuous psychological or psychiatric care. Therefore, referring you to a clinic from your own home and at your door is important and as such it is always available.
Support Groups
& Self-Help Groups
In order to effectively recover from an addiction, professional help in the field of substance abuse is only part of the equation. Often times, recovering individuals additionally needs the support of others who are also recovering from addiction. Specifically it is someone that closest to or in your own hometown so that you could use the fellowship to grow in your recovery. This is where support groups can provide a critical element needed to bring success to an individual’s recovery process.
Mentors In The Community
“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” Clients are paired with individual mentors who literally take them by hand to introduce them to drug-free housing, this is just as distancing them from the relapse. With the help of mentors, clients build new relationships with others in recovery, gradually learning new ways of life. With their mentor mentoring, they learn that transformation is real. If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.
